The Rode NTG-1 is a compact directional microphone that makes a great boom with the included pistol grip, or a higher quality on camera mic for run and gun camera operators thanks to its small size.

This compact microphone performs double duty as a lightweight boom mic, or a more directional high quality on camera mic. Rode's NTG-1 shotgun microphone has a slightly wider pick up pattern than many other shotgun mics, making it a useful all round microphone for situations requiring directional sound. A favourite of self shooting producers and small teams the NTG-1 is a good choice for documentary style productions.
The included pistol grip features a standard 3/8 inch female thread suitable for use with most boom poles and mic stands to position the mic just out of shot. The fluffy provided with this kit does a good job of deadening wind noise, however for more extreme situations where you expect a lot of wind a blimp kit might be a better option.
