More Details

The FX5’s internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW format supports demanding grading workflows.  It features three Base ISO settings – 800, 4000 and 12800 – catering to diverse lighting conditions for production.  At launch, recording capabilities reach 5K/60p, 4K/120p and Full HD/240p.  Future firmware updates will expand this to 5K/120p and 4K/240p.

Professional monitoring tools dual card slots and extensive wired and wireless connectivity make the FX5 suitable for both solo operators and larger production crews.

IMAGING AND RECORDING

Open Gate captures the full 3:2 sensor area at up to 60p, offering ample room for re-framing, stabilisation and creating various aspect ratios in post-production.  An optical low-pass filter further suppresses moiré and false colour in intricate textures and repeating patterns.

Real-time de-squeeze monitoring supports anamorphic workflows for lenses ranging from 1.3× to 2.0×.

X-OCN is available in LT, C1 and C2 variants, with C1 and C2 producing smaller files for reduced storage and transfer needs.  XAVC All-Intra and Long GOP formats provide alternatives for productions not requiring RAW.

EXPOSURE AND IMAGE QUALITY

S-Log3 offers over 15 stops of dynamic range, enabling high-contrast scenes and colour grading.  This includes compatibility with BURANO, VENICE and other compatible cameras.

Three Base ISO settings cater to controlled lighting, available-light and night shooting. Dual Gain technology minimises noise in darker areas while preserving shadow detail.

AUTOFOCUS AND STABILISATION

Fast Hybrid AF employs up to 759 phase-detection points and AI subject recognition for people, animals and birds. Priority modes ensure tracking remains on a chosen subject type.  Additional controls like AF Transition Speed, AF Subject Shift Sensitivity and AF Assist enhance movie recording.

Five-axis in-body stabilisation is complemented by Active and Dynamic Active modes, allowing operators to trade some field of view for stronger correction during handheld shooting.

OPERATION AND MONITORING

CineAlta-style menus and customisable controls create a familiar interface for crews working across Sony’s professional cinema range.  The 3.5-inch four-axis LCD can be repositioned for handheld, tripod, gimbal and low-angle shooting. Built-in monitoring tools reduce reliance on external monitors for many setups.
