DJI Ronin 4D 6K: Revolutionising Filmmaking with Speed, Stability, and Cinematic Flair

Why Use The Ronin 4D 6K?

At its core, the DJI Ronin 4D 6K is more than just a cinema camera - it’s a complete, integrated filmmaking system that streamlines everything from movement to focus, stabilisation, and power. DJI merged a high-end Zenmuse X9 sensor, a built-in 4-axis gimbal, LiDAR-assisted autofocus, and DJI’s renowned stabilisation into one compact body—creating a high-performing, fully assembled tool that dramatically cuts setup time without compromising quality.

This means you can unpack the Ronin 4D and be shooting within minutes. The built-in TB50 battery powers the camera, gimbal, monitor, and focus system—meaning fewer components and less juggling to worry about—translating directly into more creative time and less stress.

The shooting language the Ronin 4D enables is kinetic, fluid, and intensely immersive. Whether it’s dynamic single-operator run-and-gun sequences or intricately choreographed one-takes, this camera redefines what’s possible:

Traditional gimbals often require painstaking balancing with counterweights or rig adjustments for each lens or setup. The Ronin 4D flips that paradigm. Designed as a modular, integrated system, it requires minimal balancing. Its fast-mount design and well-calibrated motorisation mean you can slap on a lens and start shooting almost immediately.

The Flex accessory heightens this freedom further by letting operators detach the gimbal head—reducing handheld weight to around 1.8 kg while maintaining full control via a thin cable, perfect for tight and unconventional setups.

The 6K Zenmuse X9 sensor delivers up to 6K60 and 4K120 capture, dual-native ISOs (800 / 5000), and over 14 stops of dynamic range. ProRes 422 HQ and H.264 support provide beautifully nuanced visuals straight to the card.

Built-in ND filters, HDMI/SDI outputs, and flexible internal/external recording via CFexpress and USB-C ports further enhance its utility.

Lens adaptability is a major highlight: the DL mount accepts DJI’s native lenses, while interchangeable mount options—like Sony E, open doors to anamorphic, macro, zoom, and other specialty optics - we'll go into more detail about that below, as we have discovered some wonderful options with our own experiements along with others in the industry taking this camera to new exciting places.

Recent Productions

Adolescence (Netflix One-Take Series)

Here in the UK the Netflix production Adolescence has really made the 4D a household name. This ambitious, one-hour, single-take Netflix original was shot entirely on the Ronin 4D, and despite it not being on Netflix’s official “approved” camera list, once the pilot was submitted to Netflix they realised this was simply not going to be possible on any other camera, and made an exception to greenlight the project. We've not met anyone who watched it who'd been critical of it's image quality, far from it it's been lauded as a cinematic masterpiece, with it's Cooke SP3 lenses giving exceptional image quality.

Civil War (2024, Dir. Alex Garland)

Cinematographer Rob Hardy turned to the Ronin 4D for intense, ground-level, run-and-gun sequences in this $50 million blockbuster. He praised its flexibility—the ability to switch stabilization modes mid-shot—and master wheels, enabling remote framing control.

Other sources on the Production also credit it with bringing an authentic "feel" to the camera's movement.

Flight Risk (Recent Mel Gibson Project)

According to Digital Camera World, this film utilised the Ronin 4D extensively, leaving Gibson so impressed that he considered using it as a primary tool for future projects, underscoring the camera’s weight in Hollywood.

A high-octane project shot with custom camera systems, including Venice, bespoke Sony 6K PTZ rigs—and critically, several DJI Ronin 4Ds. While not the primary camera, the 4D contributed to dynamic vehicle shots, integrated seamlessly within an IMAX-capable setup.

Further Lens Options

Our sister company Media Dog have been experimenting with the Ronin 4D and have created a host of additional lens options, which will also be available to us here at Kit Cabin.

On the search for a more 'vintage feel', they combined the Ronin 4D 6K with a set of vintage Minolta Rokkor lenses, which are lightweight enough to work with the 4D without compromising quality, and produce a beautiful soft vintage feel.
The Rokkors have been cine modded to support the follow focus functionality and the mount changed to a E-Mount, which the Ronin can also be converted to using an R-Mount to E-Mount adapter.

With the E-Mount conversion on the Ronin, the 4D can also then utilise a host of Sony G Master lenses, such as the 24mm , 50mm, or 85mm telephoto. For super wide shots the 14mm ultra wide also works brilliantly. The G Masters provide a much cleaner crisp look, however do add a bit more weight than the DJI standard lenses.

The versatility of this camera is something which has really set it apart from competitors. Never before has the ease of an all-in-one gimbal and camera stabilised solution produced images worthy of top-end Netflex and Film releases, whilst also not limiting look and style to a single fixed lens option.

When hiring the DJI Ronin 4D 6K you may find the message says to contact us for availability, this is because of this flexibility with the kit meaning it is better spec'd depending on your shoot requirements. Please contact us and we can set you up with a brilliant stabilised solution for your production, shoot or event.
